Where is Kava and Taki Mai Going in 2016?

2015 was another great year for building awareness about kava and Taki Mai.

In addition to the exciting release of our kava powder and capsules to supplement the four flavored kava shots, we received approval in Australia as a therapeutic good, and continued to grow our presence around Oceania, as well as in the US.

We closed the year in Australia with appearances at the Rugby 7s tournaments in Queensland and northern New South Wales, as well as appearances in Auckland (New Zealand), sponsoring well-attended events.

We are also growing awareness in Fiji with the Manai Island Resort using Taki Mai in a cocktail they have developed called Taki Mai Tai; there have also been plenty of educational exhibitions and product demos in Fiji.

What can you expect in 2016 in the US?

Towards the end of last year, a Fijian Ministry of Agriculture delegation went to the US and visited the Whole Foods Market in Scottsdale, Arizona. This is one of 50 outlets in the US where Taki Mai is sold, including supermarkets, pharmaceuticals, and department stores in the Pacific and Hawaii.

Taki Mai kava shots are sold as sports drinks that can calm, soothe and relax the body.

James Tonkin is company president, and he explained a little more about what can be expected in the coming year:

“Taki Mai products will be promoted in the major outlets through demo awareness to consumers and also in the Food shows in March 2016.”

Expect to see Taki Mai kava shots hit more store shelves this year. Judging by how many new kava bars are opening across the country, demand is spiraling.

Experience the calm from our online store

Another exciting development in 2016 is the unveiling of the Taki Mai online store.

Our online platform will be up and running by mid-January for deliveries of Taki Mai kava products in New Zealand and Australia.

This is hopefully the first step in being able to ship our kava all over the world, and we are working with our distributors to make it happen.

Key challenges in 2016

Of course there are always challenges –and a consistent kava supply is one of the key challenges for Taki Mai in the year ahead.

Only the finest kava from the island of Ovalau in Fiji is used and 70 contracted farmers on the island supply the natural root to maintain the flow of kava shots to the market:

“We are keen to increase our volume and push for the four flavored Taki Mai shots to the market, but our problem is always the supply of the two varieties we require from the farmer. These two varieties that have the kava lactones levels required for the special products,” Tonkin said.

The Fijian government is doing its bit to spread awareness of the potential that export markets hold; the Taki Mai nurseries in Ovalau also continue to be a shining light for the future quality of kava coming out of the island.

There is a recognition within the Fijian government, through the blossoming success of Taki Mai, that the country has a valuable and much sought after international commodity within its islands.

The acting Permanent Secretary for Agriculture in Fiji recently said:

“What the delegation have witnessed and observed from this visit has confirmed that Kava is one of the potential commodities for Fiji and the market is huge. We have not yet tapped into Australia and New Zealand with this product and then now you have Europe that just recently reopened its market.”

We will continue to push into new frontiers in 2016, to help our Ovalau farmers, Fiji as a whole, and kava lovers around the world.

Even Thought Leaders Take Kava Supplements

We were honoured and humbled to receive a mention recently from a thought leader in healthcare in the U.S. It’s great to read about all the people enjoying our kava supplements across the world!

Tieraona Low Dog, MD has been studying natural medicine for 35 years and served as President of the American Herbalist Guild, before receiving her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine.

Specialising in integrative medicine, dietary supplements, herbal medicine, women’s health and natural medicine, she has regularly worked on national health policy:

  • Appointed by President Bill Clinton to serve on the White House Commission of Complementary and Alternative Medicine
  • Member of the Advisory Council for the National Institutes of Health National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM).

Earlier this year she received the “Herbal Insight Award” from the American Herbal Products Association and is a published National Geographic author, regular public speaker, and a frequent guest on the Dr. Oz show and NPR’s The People’s Pharmacy.

You can find out more about Tieraona Low Dog, MD here.

So what about the kava supplements?

Kava clearly plays an important part in Dr. Low Dog’s life and it was really inspiring to know that it is Fijian kava in particular that holds a special place in her heart.

This was here recent Facebook post:

“I recently finished reading a book on kava by a colleague Chris Killham, a plant I have loved ever since the first time I drank it in 1998 in Fiji. Though Chris wrote about his experience in Vanuatu, kava has played an important role in the lives of many Pacific Island communities socially, religiously, and medicinally. I find it fascinating how kava is so deeply interwoven into the very fabric of their culture. Communities enjoyed it daily (and still do) to bring about an overall sense of happiness and relaxation. Eleven randomized controlled trials have shown it to be highly effective for treating anxiety. While safety concerns were raised around kava usage, it appears they were mostly due to improperly prepared products. I often travel with Yogi Kava Stress Relief teabags, delicious. And when I want a stronger effect, I enjoy Taki Mai guava flavored over ice….. I understand why many islanders are so happy! (Well that, and the beach…)

There you go – further proof of the effectiveness of kava supplements in combating anxiety, from someone very much in the know and at the top of her profession. Thank you Dr. Low Dog!

Welcome to Fiji – Welcome to VIP Kava

VIP kava has been used by Fijians down the centuries to welcome their guests!

Fiji is known as the “friendliest place in the world” and, whether it is the Queen of England, the Pope, the President of the USA, or a Hollywood celebrity, a traditional welcome drink of kava is guaranteed. To us, it’s a way of saying “we are glad you have visited and will do everything we can to make you feel comfortable here.”

The traditional kava welcome

In the past a traditional welcome would entail a full sevu sevu ceremony. Guests take their place on a locally woven mat in a semi-circle arrangement, facing the chief. Everyone must dress modestly, keep their heads lower than the chief’s at all times, and point their feet away from him.

A bowl of kava sits in front of the chief. When it’s time to drink, the chief drinks first. When the bilo or coconut shell is refilled and passed around, the guest claps once with cupped hands and says “bula” as a sign of gratitude. Then he or she takes the bilo in both hands and raises it to the lips, drinking the contents in one go. Then the shell is handed back, the guest claps three times, and says “bula” again.

A modern welcome at the Fiji Hilton

This ritual is still performed when guest of honour visit or when a special event is taking place. But hotels and resorts in Fiji have started to get creative and use modern alternatives so that the ancient traditions are preserved for their guests.

The Hilton Fiji Beach Resort on Denarau Island recently confirmed that Taki Mai shots are now the welcome drink at the resort for VIP guests.

This is one of the top resorts in the South Pacific and it is a proud moment for Taki Mai as our VIP kava become an official part of the welcoming ceremony for guests to the country.
